Congratulations are definitely in order, as the city of Killeen released a statement on how successful the Granny Basketball Tournament was, which took place on April 25. The event was so amazing that the Killeen Parks and Recreation Department and the Heart of Texas team, also known as the Hot Chili Peppers, are now preparing for a charity game this Saturday, May 2.

If you’ve never seen this event, you’re in for a treat. We’re not talking about your regular grandmas who bake cookies, although they might do a little “shake and bake,” they bring that same energy to the court!

The Inspiring Story Behind Killeen’s Granny Basketball Tournament

There were 13 teams from across the great state that participated in the First National Bank Texas Family Recreation Center. These ladies traveled from as far as Fort Worth, Conroe, and Houston just to compete. Now, the Hot Chili Peppers are gearing up for their next matchup, and this time, it’s all for a great cause.

Where Does This Event Take Place?

The charity game, called “Hoops for Hounds,” will take place at 2 PM this Saturday at the First National Bank Texas Family Recreation Center, located at 1700 E. Stan Schlueter Loop. The Hot Chili Peppers will face off against the Killeen Parks and Recreation Department staff, and the winner will earn bragging rights for the year.

This event is open to the public, and attendees are encouraged to bring donations for dogs, such as food, treats, and toys. You can also support Texas Humane Heroes, a no-kill nonprofit located in Leander. The organization focuses on rescuing adoptable pets, reducing overpopulation through low-cost veterinary services, and strengthening the human-animal bond through community education. So come out, show your support, pick your favorite team, and help a fur baby in need!
